SkillBuild is the UK’s largest and longest running multi-trade competition for apprentices and learners. The Regional Qualifiers run from April to June each year, with eight of the highest-scoring competitors in each specialist skill going through to the National final hosted in Milton Keynes in November.

Two of Shingler Groups third year apprentices, Joe and Keegan, competed in the Regional Heat on Thursday 15th June. Both specialising in bricklaying, the students had been nominated by Shrewsbury college group and had to complete two pieces of work.

The first piece of work the students had to build was a brick pillar with slopping bricks on the edge, and the second was a brick on edge with decorative feature brickwork, finished with various styles of pointing.

Over the course of the day, Joe, Keegan and ten other students from across the region were monitored by a panel of judges. They were scored on their technical ability, time management and quality of workmanship.

Both Apprentices performed excellently, with Joe taking first place!

“It was a really good day competing at SkillBuild. It was harder than I expected, but it was a great experience. The college has been fantastic in supporting us, and fingers crossed I will make it to Milton Keynes!” – Joe Shingler.

“A great day was had by three bricklaying apprentices from Shrewsbury college. Two of the apprentice’s work for Shingler Homes Ltd (Joe Shingler and Keegan Wilson). It was a really tough day due to the heat but both Joe and Keegan worked fantastically, and the college came away with 1st and 3rd places with Joe Shingler taking 1st place. Dependent on Joe’s overall score, Joe should progress onto the national final which will take place later this year in Milton Keynes, only the top eight highest score will progress onto the final.” Steve Wainwright, Joe and Keegans’ Tutor at Shrewsbury Colleges group.

Congratulations to Joe and Keegan on their fantastic results!
